A, G and F#'s Workshop

Section Break

A, G and F# are a family of crystalline beings from the Ambrian diamond caves. Their language is sound-based, but resembles musical notes more than words, so any attempt to write their names usually ends up in some sort of music notation.

The walls of their apartment are made of a self-replicating alloy invented by their species, who needed it to support their growing population (all of whom must eat certain types of metal and minerals to survive). With a connection to the power grid, it converts energy into matter to keep growing.

In addition to providing food, the metal that grows on their walls serves as a resource for their jewelry business. They find it amusing that the extra crystals that grow on their bodies-- and fall off like hair or fingernails-- are considered so beautiful that other species will pay to have them set in a ring or necklace made of metal.

They appreciate both music and visual arts, and they make plenty of income to spend on concerts and art exhibitions held by their neighbors Kit and Sessaris.

Drawing of the one-room apartment. The walls, floor and ceiling have the texture of a cave, rough and with protrusions resembling stalactites. Apartment is completely open on the front, and a stand with jewelry hanging on it has been placed on the walkway outside. Behind the stand is a workbench, attached to the right wall. Above it, a row of cubbies hold jewelry-making supplies. One of the creatures is standing at the workbench, using a pair of pliers to set a gemstone in a setting. The creature looks like a large roundish crystal with several thin branching tentacles that end in spirals. Smaller crystals grow at various points on the tentacles. There are two other similar creatures. One is resting in a hammock that hangs from the ceiling, holding a book in two of its tentacles. The other is leaving the apartment by the back door, a small round opening like the mouth of a cave.

Photo of the sample mockup of the apartment, removed from the shelving, seen from the open side. The rough-textured walls, floor and ceiling in this version are made from aluminum foil. In this version the stand with jewelry is hanging just inside the cube, on the left wall. It is made of red satin and covered with brass jewelry set with green stones. The workbench is attached to the right wall, and rests on cabinets full of various marbles and beads, made of small translucent square snap-top containers. Above it, the row of cubbies for jewelry-making supplies are made of a 7-day pill container, with all the snap tops open to form a long shelf in front of the cubbies. The creature at the workbench is made of a large roundish piece of green glass vase-filler, and its tentacles are made of thick steel wire with thinner steel wire wrapping around it, holding small green crystal beads against it in places. One of the two other similar creatures is is leaving the apartment, the other is resting in a red satin hammock reading a small blue book made of stapled paper.

Photo of the sample mockup of the apartment, removed from the shelving, seen from the open side. This view focuses on the workbench. The cubbies hold mostly tiny corked glass bottles, filled with transparent green beads. You can also see in this view that the front of the cube is outlined in a frame of black rope, and there is a light blue crocheted rug on the floor.

A close-up of the creature resting in the hammock. Its book has a cover made of a piece of blue duct tape, with marks in gold ink that do not spell anything in any recognizable language. It is holding the book in two branches of one of its steel tentacles. The other tentacles wrap around the ends of the hammock, holding onto them like the ropes of a swing. Its body, this one made from a large green faceted bead, is almost hidden in the depths of the hammock.

A close-up of the row of cubbies for jewelry-making supplies, attached to the wall above the workbench. They are made of a 7-day pill container, with all the snap tops open to form a long shelf in front of the cubbies. On that shelf rests one piece of brass jewelry, perhaps a headband, with a round green bead on it. The mini-bottles in the cubbies hold tiny green beads. One of the cubbies also contains a pile of loose green beads, and another contains a roll of copper wire.

A close-up of the creature making jewelry at the workbench. In one of its tentacles, it holds a pair of pliers made from brass wire, with hand-grips made from black tape. In the other it holds a length of brass chain it has just made, with each link an S-shape of spiraling wire. Another roll of copper wire and a bottle-cap full of green crystal beads are sitting on the workbench.

Close-up of the stand with jewelry hanging just inside the cube, on the left wall. It is made of red satin and covered with brass jewelry set with green stones. At the top, a collar necklace with a stone in the center of a spiralling pendant, and a matching pair of spiralling earrings. Below that, two cuff bracelets of thick brass wire with much thinner wire wrapped around them; the nearer one has green stones on both ends. At the bottom, a necklace strung with many tiny green beads, with a central pendant made of three faceted green crystal beads one above the next, and two matching earrings, each one a short string of tiny beads ending in a single faceted crystal bead. Nearby on the floor is another spool of brass wire.

Another photo of the sample mockup of the apartment, removed from the shelving, this one seen from the back. You can see in this view that the back of the cube is also outlined in a frame of black rope, and so is the door, which is small and round and made from a snap-top chewing gum container. The back wall of the cube is shiny blue, and decorated with strings of tiny white pearlescent beads and larger clear pink faceted ones, which stretch across the face of the cube vertically and horizontally, and interweave with each other in a lattice pattern.

Close-up of the rope-ringed doorway from outside, focusing on the creature about to leave through it. One spiral tentacle is reaching straight out through the opening.

View of the cube from above, showing that the outer side walls and roof are covered in shiny white satin fabric, and one part of the black rope edging travels across the top of the cube from back to front.
